Course Overview

Course Overview

In this class you will learn the basics of quilting and the basics of using your Cricut for cutting fabric. You will make two small project quilts, each made of one block. They can be turned into a pillow cover, or finished to be a mini quilt. Mini quilts make great wall hangings, table décor, or doll quilts.

If you wish to make a larger quilted piece, either project can be expanded. Making three to five of each pattern makes a great table runner. Although you can make even more for a large quilt, I suggest that you stick with a smaller project when learning the techniques. Smaller projects create quick wins that will help your confidence and motivation to do more.

Quilting is a hobby with a lot of specialized language. I will explain each quilting term as you come to it, but you can also refer to the included glossary as you work through this course. Some students like to read through the glossary first, however this can also be overwhelming. Please be thoughtful about your own learning style when making that decision.

The first project will cover appliqué. I’ll explain what appliqué is, and exactly how to do it. You will be using a Monstera leaf shape, inspired by traditional Hawaiian appliqué quilts.

The second project is a traditional piecing block called a Nine Patch. It’s made up of nine squares and creates a checkerboard look when made with light and dark fabrics. It’s a great block for beginners and is great for learning how to match seams and “nest” seam allowances.

There is also a bonus project at the end, the Fence Rail Pinwheel. This pattern is made with 4 identical sections of rectangles that “spin” to create the pinwheel design.

Together these projects will introduce you to the basics of quilting and get you ready to keep going on any quilting pattern that interests you.
