Thread

Thread

Thread is not a supply to get from the dollar bin. Thread literally holds your project together so you want to get good quality thread that will also go through your machine smoothly. Better thread = less frustration.  Look for All-Purpose or Sew All threads.

You need:

  • One spool of coordinating thread. Grey works well.
  • Extra: One spool of contrasting thread.

My favorite: Gutermann Sew All 100% Polyester.

Best Brands: Gutermann, Mettler, Sulky.

Tips: Buttonhole, top-stitching, or hand quilting thread are too thick. Look for All-Purpose or Sew All on a spool that fits in your hand.  See those big cones? Cone thread is normally thinner for a serger and not what we want. Tiny spools of thread that come in a mending kit, are not strong enough for the sewing machine.

Thread weight: This can be a very confusing topic, as there are 4 or 5 different systems used internationally. If you encounter this question a 40 or 50 weight thread is ideal. When in doubt, ask for machine sewing thread.
